Bold calls and big names: The Sit-Down hits 100

  • ausopen.com

When Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot declared on The Sit-Down he would rather win the Monte Carlo Masters than a Grand Slam title, it was significant for two reasons.

Not only did he nearly speak that ambition into existence – he advanced to the Monte Carlo semifinals, by far his best result at his home tournament – but the conversation also marked the 100th episode of the podcast.

Last month The Sit-Down celebrated its second anniversary, and since launching in March 2024 many of the sport’s most notable identities have joined co-hosts Viv Christie and Matt Trollope to delve into their connection to tennis, career highlights and challenges, and what inspires them off the court.

Vacherot is one of several current stars who have appeared on The Sit-Down in 2026, a season kicked off by an interview with Stan Wawrinka.

Wawrinka appeared in the podcast’s first live episode recorded on the Grand Slam Oval Fan Stage ahead of the Australian Open, where in his final campaign at Melbourne Park he produced a thrilling, emotional run to the third round.

That Wawrinka episode is part of The Sit-Down’s growing presence on YouTube, with more episodes available to watch in full while still being released for listening in your favourite podcast player.

It’s not only current players appearing as guests. American legend Jennifer Capriati, returning to Australia for the first time in more than 20 years, joined the hosts in the studio – affectionately dubbed ‘Pod Laver Arena’ – to reflect on her glittering career amid a WTA golden era.

This was Capriati’s first podcast interview, during which the three-time major winner recalled the fighting spirit she harnessed to defend her AO title in brutal conditions in 2002, and later discussing the heartbreak of a career that ended prematurely in 2004.

Capriati is one of several former world No.1s to appear on The Sit-Down, which launched with an episode featuring current world No.1 Jannik Sinner.

The podcast also spotlights the stories of people connected in other ways to the sport.

A year before Capriati, Corey Gauff joined Christie and Trollope in the studio to discuss what it takes to raise a champion – in his case, two-time major winner and top-five star Coco Gauff.

So too did Tony Godsick, long-time agent to Roger Federer who discussed his work with one of the world’s most popular and successful athletes and how he helps manage Federer’s booming portfolio of partnerships and business ventures – including the growth of the Laver Cup.

Being an Australian podcast, The Sit-Down has also welcomed many of the local heroes currently igniting interest in tennis, like Alex de Minaur, Maya Joint, Alexei Popyrin and Talia Gibson.

The Sit-Down is part of a growing podcast offering brought to you by AO Originals. Others include Pod Laver Arena and the newly-released SNAP: The John McEnroe Default Saga, a gripping four-part series revisiting one of the most defining and controversial moments in tennis history.

Meanwhile, The Sit-Down continues to be released each Monday, with more exciting interviews – Angelique Kerber, Stan Smith and Mary Carillo among them – set to land as the tennis season unfolds.
