AO Originals launches ‘SNAP: The John McEnroe Default Saga’

  • ausopen.com

AO Originals has released the first episode of its gripping new four-part podcast series, SNAP: The John McEnroe Default Saga.

The compelling narrative series revisits one of the most defining and controversial moments in tennis history — the default of John McEnroe at Australian Open 1990.

SNAP brings to life the events and personalities surrounding the dramatic moment, drawing on first-hand accounts from those who witnessed it unfold. Through immersive storytelling and in-depth interviews, the series explores not just the event, but its lasting impact on the sport and McEnroe’s legacy.

SNAP features contributions from some of tennis’ most recognisable figures including Jim Courier, Tim Henman, Todd Woodbridge, Pat Cash, Sam Smith, Paul McNamee, Mark Petchey, Patrick McEnroe and Barbara Schett.

Central to the narrative are the perspectives of key officials and eyewitnesses such as tournament referee Peter Bellinger, chair umpire Gerry Armstrong and linesperson Di Larkin.

The series follows the success of AO Originals’ 2023 documentary The Racket, which explored the same event and its broader context.

The podcast format has enabled AO Originals to revisit the story with greater depth, expanding it into a four-part audio series that delivers rich insights and untold perspectives.

Tennis Australia Head of Original Content Xavier Muhlebach said the project was driven by a desire to go beyond the headlines of a well-known moment.

“After the success of The Racket, we felt there was much more to this story that hadn’t been fully explored,” Muhlebach said.

“SNAP has allowed us to go deeper, to spend more time with the people who were there and unpack the full context around what happened.

“History has often cast John McEnroe as a villain of the sport, but this series reveals a far more complex figure.”

Woodbridge, Australian tennis legend and 22-time Grand Slam doubles champion, said the incident remains one of the most significant moments in the sport’s history.

“It’s a moment that transcends tennis. People still talk about it decades later because it changed the way the sport is officiated and perceived,” Woodbridge said.

“What SNAP does so well is take you inside that moment and show just how much was at stake, not just for McEnroe, but for the game itself. It’s a powerful reminder of how defining moments like this shape sport over time.”

The first episode of SNAP was released on Monday 20 April, with remaining episodes to roll out weekly. The series is available on all major podcast platforms.
