Ballkids, a powerful documentary that goes behind the scenes of the Australian Open, will debut in Melbourne next month and screen throughout Victoria.
The gripping film traces the ballkids’ journeys through the selection process, the rigorous training program, and the highs and lows of the tournament.
It chronicles the experiences of rookies and seasoned veterans as they strive to become a TopGun – the best ballkids of the tournament, chosen to work at Rod Laver Arena for the prestigious finals matches.
The film will debut in Victoria – the home of the AO – at a special event at Rivoli Cinema in East Hawthorn on Saturday 20 September, hosted by Australian tennis star Casey Dellacqua.
The premiere will feature a Q&A with the filmmakers, ballkids from the cast and special guests.
Ballkids will then screen at Village Cinemas across the state over two weekends – 20-21 and 27-28 September – during the Victorian school holidays.
Ballkids is narrated by Celia Pacquola, one of Australia's most beloved comedians and actors known for her roles in Utopia, Rosehaven, and Thank God You’re Here.
Presented by AO Originals, Ballkids is produced by Run Wild Productions in association with Mischief Media. It is distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Icon Film Distribution.
Run Wild Productions Director and Producer Scott Baskett said: “As a spectator, it’s clear that the ballkids are integral to the smooth running of the tournament. But when filming for Ballkids we discovered firsthand how much effort, skill and determination they have to have plying their craft. And to make it to the top, that’s just next level.
“This documentary is not just about tennis, it’s about resilience, teamwork and the pursuit of perfection – values that transcend the sport itself. We’re really excited to be launching the film in Victorian cinemas and can’t wait to celebrate these unsung legends of the game.”
Tennis Australia Head of Original Content Xavier Muhlebach said Ballkids was all about celebrating the amazing kids who kept the Australian Open moving.
“Filming with them was such a fun and inspiring experience,” he said.
“Seeing their dedication and love for the game up close really brings a fresh perspective to what they do.
“We’re especially proud that the film will be hitting cinemas in Victoria, the home of the AO, where tennis is such a big part of the culture and community.”
Mischief Media Producer Naomi Just said they hit the jackpot with Celia Pacquola as narrator.
“She has such warmth and humour, which perfectly complements the inspiring, high-energy stakes of the film,” she said.
“It makes perfect sense for Melbourne and Victoria to host the launch of the film – it is the home of the AO and the best ballkids in the world, after all!”
