Swiatek v Halep: in-form stars meet in Indian Wells semis

  • Matt Trollope

It is tough to forecast who will prevail when Iga Swiatek and Simona Halep meet for the fourth time on Friday – this time in the Indian Wells semifinals.

Both were unforgiving in their quarterfinals on Wednesday; Halep steamrolled Petra Martic 6-1 6-1 before Swiatek followed her into Stadium 1 and crushed Madison Keys 6-1 6-0.

Those results set up a blockbuster clash between the sport’s surging young star and a resurgent veteran, with the head-to-head poised at an intriguing juncture.

Head-to-head: Halep leads Swiatek 2-1
Year Winner Score Event Surface Round
2019 Halep 6-1 6-0 Roland Garros Clay 4R
2020 Swiatek 6-1 6-2 Roland Garros Clay 4R
2021 Halep 3-6 6-1 6-4 Australian Open Hard 4R

Swiatek’s 56-minute victory over Keys was her ninth straight, giving her a tour-leading 18th match win in 2022.

A winner in Doha just two weeks ago – where she lost just two games in the final against Anett Kontaveit – and at a career-high ranking of No.4, Swiatek perhaps shapes as a slight favourite when she faces the Romanian veteran.

Swiatek even produced a similarly dominant performance against Halep herself, 18 months ago en route to her first Grand Slam singles title at Roland Garros.

That 6-1 6-2 demolition of Halep was arguably her signature victory from that breakthrough French fortnight, helping to establish Swiatek as one of the game’s elite.

But Halep avenged that loss with a three-set victory over 20-year-old in the fourth round of Australian Open 2021.

Wary of how the former world No.1 has previously unravelled her, Swiatek said she was treating this upcoming battle as a litmus test.

“She’s playing some good tennis right now. She’s really consistent,” Swiatek said.

“I don’t know how many unforced errors she had today (against Martic), but probably less than 10. She’s in great shape.

“It’s going to be a tough match; it’s always like that against Simona.

“For me, it’s going to be a test. I can see how much I’ve improved, because I feel like my tennis is changing.”

In their fourth career meeting, 30-year-old Halep will take on Swiatek at a tournament that has seen her produce some of her best tennis.

The 2015 champion is through to the Indian Wells semifinals for the fourth time, with straight-sets wins over Coco Gauff, Sorana Cirstea and Martic improving her lifetime record at the event to 28-9.

Another victory over Swiatek would boost her 2022 record to a sparkling 16-3.

But having been on the receiving end of Swiatek’s firepower before, Halep is looking no further than this final-four assignment.

"(It will be a) tough match, because she's playing the best tennis of her life," Halep observed.

"She's in the best moment. I expect a really tough one. But I'm here in the semifinal, so I'll take that.

“I'll just try my best."
