Barty will not defend French Open title

World No.1 Ash Barty will not defend her French Open title after choosing not to travel to Europe because of  ongoing concerns presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020 edition of Roland Garros has been rescheduled to begin on 27 September, with the tournament’s traditional May-June dates falling within tennis’s five-month COVID-19 suspension.

Barty broke through for her first Grand Slam singles title last June in Paris, shortly before ascending to the world’s top ranking.

The Australian star said her choice not to compete was a difficult one to make, and would also see her miss the lead-up event in Rome.

“There are two reasons for my decision. The first is the health risks that still exist with Covid. The second is my preparation, which has not been ideal without my coach being able to train with me due to the state border closures in Australia,” she explained.

“Last year’s French Open was the most special tournament of my career so this is not a decision I have made lightly.

“I wish the players and the French Federation all the best for a successful tournament.”

Barty last competed at February’s WTA tournament in Doha, where she reached the semifinals.

It was part of a strong start to the 2020 season, during which the 24-year-old won 11 of her first 14 matches before the season was suspended in March.

Barty instead turns her attention to the Australian summer of 2021.

“I now look forward to a long preseason and the summer in Australia,” said Barty, who won the 2020 Adelaide International before progressing to the Australian Open semifinals.

“It has been a challenging year for everyone and although I am disappointed on a tennis front, the health and well-being of my family and my team will always be my priority.

“Thank you to my fans for your continued support, I can’t wait to play for you again.”
