AO Day 9: The last time...

The Last Time Caroline Wozniacki made the semifinals in Melbourne
2011 - On Day 6 we looked at the last time the Dane reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, which was in 2012, but we have to go back one year further to find her most recent, and only semifinal in Melbourne. In 2011 Wozniacki was world No.1 at the young age of 20, and she was in sublime form throughout the tournament, dropping only one set en route to the final four. However she ran into a red hot Li Na and fell in a three-set encounter despite taking the opener. The No.2 seed will be looking to return to semifinal action as she takes on Carla Suarez Navarro on Tuesday.

The Last Time Cilic beat Nadal
2009 - Rafael Nadal and Marin Cilic first met back in the semifinals of Beijing in 2009, and the then 21-year-old Cilic turned heads when he dispatched the Spaniard 6-1 6-3. The Croatian would lose in straight sets to Novak Djokovic. Since then Nadal has won their last five meetings with the loss of just one set. The world No.1 has also claimed their only Grand Slam encounter, in straight sets at the 2011 edition in Melbourne. Can Cilic turn the tables on Day 9?

The Last Time a Belgian woman made a Grand Slam semifinal
2013 - When you think of Belgian female tennis players making major semifinals you think of Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin. But surprisingly the nation’s most recent slam semifinalist is Kirsten Flipkens. Back at Wimbledon in 2013 the then 27-year-old made a stunning run with wins over Flavia Pennetta and former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova before falling to eventual champion Marion Bartoli in the final four. Her compatriot Elise Mertens has a chance to replicate the feat when she takes on Elina Svitolina on Day 9.

The Last Time a British man other than Andy Murray reached the Australian Open semifinals
1977 (December) - Kyle Edmund has a chance to enter rarified air when he takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. Should he win, he will become the first British man other than Andy Murray to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open since the December edition of the Australian Open in 1977. That year two events were held in Melbourne, one in January and one in December. In the latter it was Brit John Lloyd who made a dazzling run to the final, defeating the likes of Syd Ball, Cliff Letcher and John Newcombe en route to a devastating loss in the final against top seed Vitas Gerulaitis, where he clawed his way back from two sets down to force a decider before ultimately falling 6-2 in the fifth. Can Kyle Edmund do what the likes of Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman never did and reach the final four in Melbourne?

The Last Time a Ukrainian player made a major semifinal
1999 - Male or female, it has been lean times for Ukrainian tennis, other than a few flashes of brilliance from Alexandr Dolgopolov over the last eight years. Not since Andriy Medvedev at the 1999 French Open has a Ukrainian player reached a Grand Slam semifinal. That year he would defeat the likes of Pete Sampras and Gustavo Kuerten en route to the final, where he squandered a two-set lead against Andre Agassi before eventually falling in five. His compatriot Elina Svitolina has a huge chance to win this year’s Australian Open, and can become the first player from her country to reach a major semifinal with a win over Elise Mertens in the quarterfinals.

The Last Time the top seeds won the men’s doubles in Melbourne
2013 - It has been five years since the top seeds have lifted the trophy at Melbourne Park, with the closest being two quarterfinals appearances in 2016 and 2017. Of course the last top seeds to win the title are the Bryan Brothers, who claimed a 6-3 6-4 win over the Dutch pairing of Igor Sijsling and Robin Haase. Reigning Wimbledon champions and top-ranked doubles team Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo are still in the tournament, and have only lost one set en route to the quarterfinals. They take on the Japanese-German pair of Ben McLachlan and Jan-Lennard Struff on Tuesday as they chase their second major title as a pair.
