Rex Hartwig

Hall of Fame

Inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame in 2016.

Nicknamed the ‘Wrecker’ for the way he could demolish opponents, Hartwig possessed perfectly-timed groundstrokes and was respected for crisp and accurate volleys. He was a four-time men’s doubles Grand Slam champion, winning three titles alongside Mervyn Rose and one with Lew Hoad. He also twice won the Australian Open mixed doubles title. Hartwig reached a career-high singles ranking of No.5 and was runner-up at both the Australian Open and US Open in 1954. Hartwig had a near exemplary Davis Cup record, winning 12 of his 13 rubbers for Australia, and was a member of the 1953 and 1955 winning teams.
