Murray impressed by new Player Pod

  • Tennis Australia

Andy Murray described improvements to player facilities for Australian Open 2019 as “really, really significant” after getting a chance to use the new four-level Player Pod.

The five-time finalist arrived at Melbourne Park on Saturday and was quick to praise the latest developments, saying on social media they are “by far the best facilities on tour now and it’s not even close”.

Speaking alongside Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley and Acting Premier Tim Pallas on Sunday, Murray added: “I’m sure the feedback you’ll get will be excellent.

“Players will really appreciate the changes and the difference the Aussie Open and the government makes to make this tournament even better for the players.

“Pretty much every year when we come back here there’s changes and improvements that are made, but this is really, really significant.

“Huge locker rooms, better recovery facilities, the dining facilities are really, really good and it will be much more comfortable for the players.”

The Player Pod, on the eastern side of Rod Laver Arena, is the result of years of painstaking hard work and consultation with the players, the Victoria Government, Melbourne Park, architects and builders.

The total dedicated player zone has increased by up to 30 per cent in some areas, with stunning spaces for training, treatment, recovery, dining and lounging, all designed with maximum comfort, convenience and luxury in mind.

“It is a special time for us,” said Tiley.

“We welcome 550 players over the course of the next three weeks, many of which are here already. The comments that we’ve heard from them directly and indirectly make us particularly proud.”
