Melbourne Park serves up Disney magic

  • Tennis Australia

The tennis just got a little more magical with The Walt Disney Company Australia becoming the Official Family Entertainment Partner of Australian Open 2018. Tiny fans dressed as their favourite Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar characters took over Melbourne Park today for the announcement with a special guest appearance by Mickey Mouse.

Some of the world’s most loved characters will be promoted across the precinct at the popular AO Ballpark and will feature at the Rod Laver Arena spectacular on Kids Tennis Day. “We are delighted to team up with Disney, one of the world’s most loved family brands and one that resonates with both the young and the young at heart,” Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said today.

“The Australian Open focuses on creating memorable experiences for players and fans, and we believe that Disney will help make this AO extra special. Our commitment to family friendly offerings throughout the two weeks is continuing to grow. Our highly popular AO Ballpark will be back for a second year, with Disney providing expanded entertainment in this area,” Craig Tiley continued.

“I have no doubt this will be a hit with kids of all ages, especially some of our players who I’m sure we will see exchanging their racquets for light sabres in the Star Wars area or discovering their inner Disney princess,” Chief Revenue Officer of Tennis Australia Richard Heaselgrave added. "The Australian Open is an iconic event that has brought families from all around the world together for more than 100 years, and we are delighted to be its Official Family Entertainment Partner in 2018,” Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company, Australia and New Zealand Kylie Watson-Wheeler said.

“Whether it’s the Star Wars, Marvel or Disney Princess zone, there are many great opportunities for fans of all ages to experience the magic of one of our compelling franchises, and we look forward to what will no doubt be another memorable Australian Open.”

Exclusive Disney merchandise will also be available on the site, allowing tennis fans to take a special memento of their time at one of the happiest places in Melbourne over the summer. The AO Ballpark will also feature LEGO, NERF as well as a 60 metre zipline, and will operate from Monday 15 January – Thursday 25 January.

Kids Tennis Day will take place on Saturday 13 January, with special guest appearances still to be announced.
