'Excited' Kyrgios cruises to set up Medvedev meeting

  • Alex Sharp

The crowd in the palm of his hand, "Kyrgios Court" reached fever-pitch once again for the return of their mercurial host.

Nick Kyrgios was acting like a conductor on Tuesday night, orchestrating his fans as the 26-year-old ignited his Australian Open 2022 campaign.

The show is set to get even better, with the second act lined up as world No.2 Daniil Medvedev versus Kyrgios.

It's a match which should be spoilt with shot-making riches and mind games aplenty. Kyrgios, with his swagger from Tuesday's 6-4 6-4 6-3 victory over Liam Broady at John Cain Arena, is poised to bring his full repertoire against the US Open champion.

It's the kind of challenge Kyrgios can really sink his teeth into, to disrupt the narrative of favourites and title contenders.

"Obviously either way it's going to be a hell of an experience for me. He's probably 'the' best player in the world at the moment. I'm excited for that moment. That's why I play the game," admitted the world No.115.

"That was always something I wanted to prove to people that someone like me could do, win those matches. I'm not going to go into it with a lot of expectation. I'm going to go out there, have some fun, play my game. I have a pretty set-in-stone game plan of what I need to do to have success.

"He's a hard worker, ticks all the boxes. To play it on John Cain (Arena) would be – I'm just going to call it the Kyrgios Court – would be fun."

Kyrgios, who last tasted victory in July in Atlanta, was in his element back on home courts.

Some slick hand skills saw him cup his ear to the crowd in the very first game, cajoling the locals to get involved, signalling 'my house'.

The atmosphere simply exploded after Kyrgios whipped an underarm tweener serve to consolidate his immediate break. Six aces in two games, he was red-hot wearing a red vest, and never looked back in a complete performance.

On his favourite court, Kyrgios showed his full repertoire

"I think that's something I have kind of created on that court. They know what to expect," claimed Kyrgios.

"I think from the get-go, I know I've got the crowd in the palm of my hand, and any time I can use that to spark some energy.

"Obviously Liam is a great player, but his experience on that court in that situation, when the crowd is going nuts, he has never experienced that before, hence the reason why on break points I'm trying to get the crowd up, get him to feel the pressure a little bit more."

It's a cunning ploy by Kyrgios, and he'll have to repeat his conducting against Medvedev.

His ability to brush aside world No.128 Broady was a first victory in six months, his first competitive clash since the US Open. Having been bedridden by Covid a week ago, this was a commendable effort in his 2022 opener.

"Obviously a lot of nerves, a lot of pressure," he admitted.

"Obviously hearing the news I was positive, I knew what that was going to lead to, the week of quarantine, and not having the ideal preparation, not getting the physio, not getting the treatment.

"I'm pretty pleased with the way I responded. It was a pretty flawless, everything I could control, serving, attitude, all the non-negotiables, I did great."

That's the answer from a very content individual, who is speaking as well as playing carefree.

"I've got to go back, have some dinner with my team, not take little moments like that for granted. I love just going back to my Airbnb, enjoying some time with them," said the home charge.

"Tomorrow I have some doubles. I'm just going to go with the flow. I don't plan. To be honest, I don't really care at the moment. When I cross that bridge of playing Daniil when I walk out there, that's when I will deal with that."

Whether it is on "Kyrgios Court" or not, expect another show.
