AO Day 6: The last time...

  • Val Febbo

The Last Time Gasquet took a set off Federer
2011 - It has been a long time for the Frenchman since he last took a set off the Swiss Maestro, with that coming in Gasquet’s last win over Federer back at the Rome Masters in 2011. The Frenchman won that match 4-6 7-6(2) 7-6(4) in what was only his second win over Federer. The world No.2 has won their last eight meetings and the last 17 consecutive sets. Gasquet will be hoping to rectify one of those stats when the pair face off on Saturday night at Rod Laver Arena.

The Last Time Sharapova beat Kerber
2013 - It has been almost five years since Sharapova tasted victory against Kerber, with the German winning their last two meetings in tight three set encounters. The Russian’s last win over Kerber came in Stuttgart in 2013, where Sharapova claimed an epic semifinal 6-3 2-6 7-5 win en route to the title. Will she be able to replicate that result on Rod Laver Arena in the night session on Day 6?

The Last Time Julien Benneteau reached the fourth round at a major
2010 - The 36-year-old Frenchman continued his phenomenal form from the end of 2017 by defeating seventh seed David Goffin in the second round of the Australian Open. He will be striving to reach his first Grand Slam fourth round since Wimbledon 2010 when he takes on Italian 25th seed Fabio Fognini on Day 6 at Melbourne Park. That year he ran into an in form Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and was defeated in four sets.

The Last Time a lucky loser made it through to the fourth round at a Grand Slam
1995 - It has been over two decades since the last lucky loser reached the fourth round of a major, and that was Belgian Dick Norman at Wimbledon in 1995. Norman defeated Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg and Todd Woodbridge before eventually being knocked out by eventual runner up Boris Becker in the fourth round. American lucky loser Bernarda Pera has a chance to end the drought when she takes on 29th seed Barbora Strycova.

The Last Time Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro met in a Grand Slam
2012 - It has almost been six years since Berdych and del Potro met in a major, with that meeting coming in the 2012 French Open fourth round. The Argentine would emerge victorious with a 7-6(6) 1-6 6-3 7-5 win before losing in five sets to Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. It is one of the headline matches on Day 6, with both desperate to get to the fourth round in Melbourne.

The Last Time Leander Paes won a Grand Slam doubles title
2013 - The Indian legend first entered a Grand Slam doubles draw at Wimbledon in 1993, before taking his first major title at the French Open in 1999. He has won eight slams in doubles, with his last coming at the US Open in 2013, where he and Radek Stepanek defeated Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-1 6-3 in the final. Paes has teamed up with compatriot Purav Raja and they take on fifth seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in the second round of doubles action on Day 6.

The Last Time an Australian won the junior girls’ singles at the Aus Open
1995 - It has been 22 years since a member of the home nation lifted the girls’ singles trophy at the Australian Open. That year it was Siobhan Drake-Brockman who defeated compatriot Annabel Ellwood 6-3 4-6 7-5. Since then only one Australian has made the final, which was Jessica Moore in 2008. The junior tournaments begin on Day 6 with seven home grown talents in the draw.

The Last Time Lleyton Hewitt made the third round in doubles at a Grand Slam
2016 - The Australian has been retired for almost two years but the opportunity to pair up with his close friend Sam Groth in his final tournament was too good to pass up. Hewitt also paired with Groth at Australian Open 2016 when the former world No.1 announced his retirement. The pair reached the third round before falling to Canadian/American duo Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock. The Australians will take on third seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau on Day 6 in an attempt to replicate their result from two years ago.
