Better with age? How Djokovic’s post-30 Grand Slam numbers stack up

  • Patric Ridge

Novak Djokovic made Grand Slam history in his Australian Open 2025 second-round match.

When he took to the court to face Jaime Faria at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday the Serbian played his 430th singles match at a major. That took him clear of Roger Federer as the outright record holder for the most Grand Slam singles matches.

Of those matches, 105 have come at the AO, where he holds a hugely impressive 96-9 win-loss record – that 91.4% win ratio is his best across any of the four Grand Slams, while he has only recorded more match wins at Wimbledon (97).

Yet Djokovic’s 6-1 6-7(4) 6-3 6-2 victory also brought up another milestone for the 10-time AO champion – it was his 150th win at a major since he turned 30.

He is the first man to hit that landmark, with only one other player having managed it: Serena Williams, with 159.

Twelve of Djokovic's 24 Grand Slam titles have come since he turned 30, demonstrating his remarkable longevity. Williams, meanwhile, collected nine of her 23 major crowns after turning 30.

Williams’ post-30 major trophy haul was made up of two AO titles, two Roland Garros wins, three Wimbledon triumphs and three US Open successes.

Djokovic, on the other hand, has won AO four times, Roland Garros twice, Wimbledon on four occasions and the US Open twice in his thirties.

However, how do the duo stack up to two of tennis’ other modern greats – Roger Federer and Rafeal Nadal?

Only four of Federer’s 20 Grand Slam titles came after he turned 30 in 2011, while Nadal clinched eight majors in his thirties.

In terms of post-30 major match wins, Federer managed 146, while Nadal has the fewest of this star quartet with 114.

The Spaniard lost 14 times at Grand Slams after his 30th birthday, which matches Djokovic’s tally. Federer, on the other hand, suffered 27 such defeats, and Williams slipped to 24 losses.

Djokovic won more Grand Slam matches than the other three superstars before turning 30, with 229 victories. Federer ranked second (223), ahead of Williams on 208 and Nadal on 200.

Diving into the individual tournaments, Djokovic’s most successful Grand Slam before he turned 30 was the US Open (62 match wins), with the AO next (58). Nadal won an extraordinary 72 matches at Roland Garros, while Federer claimed 59 wins at both Wimbledon and AO. Wimbledon, meanwhile, was where Williams recorded her most match wins prior to her 30th birthday (60).

Williams is, of course, Djokovic’s equivalent when it comes to success at AO. The American owns the record for the most women’s singles titles at the event, with seven. That haul also includes the last major trophy she won, when she beat her sister Venus in the 2017 final.

But Williams is actually ahead of Djokovic when it comes to match victories at the tournament after she turned 30, recording 41.

Djokovic is on 38, meaning he will need to make it to the semifinals this time around to match Williams. He will have to reach the final to surpass her.

But even a title charge at AO 2025 would not be enough for Djokovic to equal Federer’s tally of 43 wins at the event after his 30th birthday.

It is worth noting, though, that Djokovic missed AO 2022. Had he been able to compete, he might well own the record already.

And the 37-year-old does boast the best winning AO percentage of these players after turning 30, at 95%. Federer registered 86%, Williams was at 85.4% and Nadal at 84.1%, so it goes to show just how efficient the record champion has been at Melbourne Park.

Impressively, Djokovic’s AO win ratio is up from 89.2% before he turned 30. Nadal’s also went up, from 81.8%, but Federer and Williams saw theirs drop from 88% and 89.5% respectively.

Djokovic has reached four AO finals since turning 30, winning all of them. Williams made three in a row between 2015 and 2017, while Nadal got to three and Federer made two.

As the stats show, Djokovic has got better with age at the AO, arguably more so than any of the other modern greats, and there is plenty for him still to achieve at AO 2025.
