AO Day 4: The last time...

  • Val Febbo
  • Ben Solomon

The Last Time Federer was taken to five in the second round of the Australian Open
2011 - Federer has a phenomenal record in the second round of Australian Open, having only dropped three sets since his first venture to Melbourne in 2000. The world No.2 conceded two of these sets to an in-form Gilles Simon in 2011. The Frenchman was fresh off the Sydney title and came from two sets down to push a decider. Federer was ultimately too strong and finished the match en route to the semifinals. The Swiss Maestro takes on Jan-Lennard Struff second in the Rod Laver Arena night session on Day 4.

The Last Time Halep played Bouchard
2014 WTA Finals - The last time these two players met they were in the most prestigious of tournaments, the WTA Finals. Halep got the better of Bouchard that day, winning 6-2 6-3 en route to the final. Since then the Romanian has continued her consistency, remaining in the top 10, while Bouchard has endured a difficult three years with form. On night 4 of the Australian Open these two will grace Margaret Court Arena in what should be an epic.

The Last Time two Italian men made the third round at a Grand Slam
2015 US Open - It has been two and a half years since Italy has boasted two men in the final 32 of a Grand Slam. That year it was Italian stalwarts Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi reaching the third round at Flushing Meadows. Seppi would fall to eventual winner Novak Djokovic while Fognini would go one round further before losing to Feliciano Lopez. Seppi is already through in Melbourne and Fognini can join him with a win over Evgeny Donskoy on Day 4 of Australian Open 2018.

The Last Time someone older than Ivo Karlovic made the third round in Melbourne
1978 - Dr Ivo’s epic 7-6(3) 6-7(3) 7-5 4-6 12-10 win over Yuichi Sugita on Day 3 was remarkable considering he turns 39 next month, but what is even more remarkable is that he is the oldest man since Australian legend Ken Rosewall to make the third round at the Australian Open. In 1978 a 44-year-old Rosewall would reach the third round before falling to Austrian Peter Feigl in five sets. With the draws back only made up of 64 entrants, Karlovic is the oldest player ever to reach the final 32 at the Australian Open.

The Last Time Djokovic played Monfils
2017 Eastbourne Final - If you got tickets to the afternoon session at Rod Laver Arena for Day 4 of the Australian Open you are in luck. These two players are some of the most talented on tour and are both on the return from injury. Djokovic is 14-0 against the Frenchman, including the Eastbourne final, their most recent meeting, in which the former No.1 won 6-3 6-4. Moflis however is in ominous form after winning the Doha title in the opening week of the season, will it be a case of 15th time’s the charm?

The Last Time Angelique Kerber lost on her birthday
Never - The former world No.1 and 2016 champion celebrates her birthday on Day 4 of the Australian Open, and she has never lost on the big day before, having played in 2010, 2013 and 2017. The now 30-year-old will look to keep her streak alive when she takes on Donna Vekic on Margaret Court Arena in the afternoon session.

The Last Time Agnieszka Radwanska lost in the second round at the same slam in consecutive years
2009-11 US Opens - It has been a long time since the former world No.2 has been defeated in the second round at the same major in consecutive years, but should she fall to Lesia Tsurenko on Day 4, she will match her second round result last year, where she was defeated by Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in straight sets. It will be the first time since the 2009-11 editions of the US Open that she will have had successive second round losses at one slam.

Last Time Hyeon Chung met Daniil Medvedev
2017 ATP NextGen Finals - It is another mouthwatering clash on Day 4 with two of the best young prospects in the game going head to head. The last time they met was in the semifinal of last year’s ATP NextGen Finals, where Chung claimed victory in a five-set thriller in Milan, although they were shortened sets. With Medvedev just coming off a Sydney title and Chung in reasonable form, it would be wise to get out to Court 8 for this one.

The Last Time Andrea Petkovic made the third round in Melbourne
2011 - The German former world No.9 has endured a tough time with injury over the past few seasons, not having advanced beyond the section round in Melbourne since her run to the quarterfinals in 2011. That year she would lose to eventual finalist Li Na in the last eight before missing the next two editions of the event. She takes on Lauren Davis on Court 14 as she bids to return to the third round.
