AO Day 3: The last time...

  • Val Febbo

The Last Time Shapovalov and Tsonga met
2017 US Open second round -
It was billed as a potential epic in New York last September, and Denis Shapovalov delivered, showing why he has been labelled as the next big thing on the ATP World Tour. The Canadian’s straight-sets win over the 2008 AO finalist was one of the most memorable showdowns of the previous major. The pair will do battle again in the second match on Margaret Court Arena on Day 3.

The Last Time a 15-year-old made the third round of a Grand Slam
2005 -
Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk has the chance to progress through to the third round when she takes on Australia’s Olivia Rogowska on day three. Not since 2005 has a 15-year-old made the round of 32: that year it was Nicole Vaidisova who then lost to reigning world No.1 Lindsay Davenport.

The Last Time Matt Ebden made the second round of the Australian Open
2014 -
It has been four years since Matthew Ebden found himself in the round of 64 at his home major, defeating Nicolas Mahut in five sets to progress before taking on Canadian Vasek Pospisil in his Rod Laver Arena debut two days later. He won the opening set against the Canadian, but was worn down to lose in four. The Australian will attempt to achieve his best Grand Slam result when he takes on Alexandr Dolgopolov on MCA on Wednesday night.

The Last Time Kaia Kanepi reached the third round at Melbourne Park
2009 -
Injuries have plagued the Estonian for the last two years, and in her first Australian Open since 2015, Kanepi has a chance to end a nine-year wait to reach the round of 32 against Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig. At the same stage in 2009, Kanepi suffered a straight sets defeat at the hands of Dinara Safina.

The Last Time Gilles Simon lost before the third round at the Australian Open
2012 -
The wily Frenchman is in the second round in Melbourne for the eighth year in a row, having not lost at this stage for the last five years. The last time he was foiled was in 2012 against fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau, where Simon rallied from two sets down to force a decider before eventually running out of steam. He takes on Spanish No.10 seed Pablo Carreno Busta on day three to try and keep his streak alive.

The Last Time Kirsten Flipkens reached the third round at a major
2014 -
It has been a long time since the 32-year-old has progressed beyond the second round at a Grand Slam, failing in her last six attempts including the last three Slams. The last time she progressed to the round of 32 at a Slam was at Wimbledon in 2014, where she conceded a one set lead before falling to Angelique Kerber in three. She will look to rectify her second-round record against No.19 seed Magdalena Rybarikova.

The Last Time the Bryan brothers won a Grand Slam
2014 -
We have to trek back to the US Open in 2014 to find when the the most successful partnership in men’s doubles last hoisted a major. That year they defeated the Spanish duo of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez in straight sets. Since then they have made three more finals without success. The 16-time Grand Slam champions will take on Russian duo Evgeny Donskoy and Daniil Medvedev to kickstart their campaign.

The Last Time Marcos Baghdatis made the quarterfinals at a major
2007 -
The 2006 Australian Open finalist has had a lean period of late when it comes to slams, having only progressed to the round of 32 three times since 2014. His last run to a major quarterfinal was back in 2007, when he fell to Novak Djokovic in an epic five-setter after coming back from two sets down. It may be a long shot for the Cypriot to reach the last eight in Melbourne but he has fond memories here and can still play some scintillating tennis. He takes on No.30 seed Andrey Rublev on Wednesday.

The Last Time Ryan Harrison faced Pablo Cuevas
2008 -
It is hard to believe that the pair have not played each other for almost ten years on tour, but Harrison’s injury troubles may have played a part. The last meeting between the Uruguayan and the American came on the clay courts of Houston back in 2008, when a then 15-year-old Harrison stunned Cuevas to win his first ATP match. The duo will do battle once again out on Court 7.

The Last Time Julia Goerges made the third round at the AO
2015 -
The German No.12 seed has lost her last two second-round encounters at the Australian Open, progressing in 2015 and going on to reach the round of 16 before falling to Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets. The 29-year-old will meet Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the first night session match on Margaret Court Arena.
